The legend of Folly
Once, a rich man build a house for his new bride. When the house was ready he planted the garden with white flowers and took his bride to Jamaica for their honeymoon. All was ready for a romantic life, he thought.

But..., while building the house he made a terrible mistake: the concrete was mixed with seawater. And just at the moment he carried his brand-new wife over the threshold the concrete began to crumble. His wife fled in terror at the oman and left immediately. She never returned...

Actually the house was build in 1905 by Alfred Mitchell, a jeweler from the United States. He lived there till his death. The salt sea-air did change the house into a ruin, which is still there today.

Mmm, sometimes a legend is more romantic than reality...

Banana's and Errol Flynn...

Perhaps Portland may be considered as the most beautiful part of Jamaica. The always-green landscape is dazzling.
Relatively most of the rain is falling in that area. The monsoon from the northeast is stopped by the Blue Mountains and is causing the moisty climate.
At the foot of the same Blue Mountains there are two harbors: West Harbour and East Harbour. In the 18th century a settlement we now know as Port Antonio developed here.

Bananas
While the highest mountain of Jamaica, Blue Mountain Peak is overlooking, this is the region of the banana plantations. As far as the eye can reach you see banana's, still an important agricultural product.

The now empty warehouses are the silent witnesses of the fact that Port Antonio once was one of the most important harbors for the export of banana's. The Boston Fruit Company brought the banana trade to full development. The founder, captain Lorenzo Dow Baker, filled his banana boats after discharging in America, with the first tourists visiting Port Antonio.

Port Antonio - Always green...

For a long period Port Antonio was a spot for the rich of this earth. Perhaps Errol Flynn is here the most known of them. The ranch on Priestman's River is still there. But there were more: Bette Davis, Ginger Rogers and other celebrities had chosen Port Antonio as their settlement.
And that's a fact where the local people are still proud of.

Port Antonio is a small town for those who are searching for rest and nature. It is a good starting point for trips in the environment.

Many bays from which Frenchman's Cove and Blue Hole are the best known are decorating the neighborhood. Blue Hole is better known as Blue Lagoon after the movie with the same name and Brooke Shields in the leading part.
Do you want to go to Kingston and you have enough time then take a secondary road. This road is not passable easily but this will be made good plentifully by the climb throughout the Blue Mountains. It is here that you will find the great beauty of untouched Jamaica.

The Marrons
Very much worthwhile is a trip to Moore Town, capital of the Marrons. Be acquainted with those proud people with a stirring history. It will be appreciated very much if you announce your visit on beforehand, something that can be arranged via the Jamaica Tourist Board in Port Antonio.
Port Antonio is the birthplace of the "Meet the people" program. Do you like to join a real Jamaican family for a day, then this is the ideal possibility.

Port Antonio - Hotel Mocking Bird Hill

Although Port Antonio in the past was definitively a touristy bastion it is nowadays not overrunned by visitors.
It has a totally other emanation compared with the western part of Jamaica. And that is exactly why Port Antonio is worthwhile to be visited.
