A few lines about us...

This site is a hobby.
There is no professional organisation behind the pages of DutchJamaica.com.
We are just... Jamaica lovers ;-)

A lil history...
In October 1997 we landed for the first time on Sangster's International Airport in Montego Bay. From that moment we certainly had no intention to return to Jamaica every year. We had a beach-vacation in our mind. Three weeks be idle under the Caribbean sun and thereafter back to business as usual. That's what we thought on this before we went to the airport in Brussels...

Well, you cannot arrange everything in life... Almost immediately we were taken with the land and her population. Their view on life made it clear to us that all the things we are bothering about in Western Europe in fact many times are to laugh at. The Jamaicans put us back on earth with both legs. But in such a way that we kept friends from this.

Anyway: three weeks beach-vacation became a voyage of discovery on possibly the most beautiful island of the Caribbean area.We made new friends, learned about a (for us) new culture with all her positive but, unfortunately, some negative aspects too.

We got acquainted with the Ackee, the Doctor Bird and the fact that Jamaica is much, much more than Bob Marley and Ganja…… All together only one thing remained: coming back the next year.

Once back in Europe we wrote down some of our experiences and published these on our homepage. Now, many years later, we realize that on that very special moment "A Dutch view on Jamaica" was born.

Our best friend...

The site
Many valuable sites about Jamaica can be found on the web. They offer a wealth of information for the visitor and other interested people. Nevertheless we encounter always the same information. Of course, Dunn's River Falls, Nine Mile and the snowy white beaches of Jamaica are "musts", no doubt about that.
But our annual visits to the island brought in much more. An impressive history, a magnificent nature, culinary highlights, possibilities of going out, special towns and villages and, not forgetting, a fascinating population which is proud to welcome the visitor.
But we couldn't find much of this information on the net.
And so, on the quiet, we enlarged our homepage to a worthwhile website.

Actually, that means, we are still building. The website begins to get its shape but is still far from her completion. (and whether this ever will succeed?).
Taken into account the many reactions we receive our initiative is appreciated and so we build on merrily, next to our daily work and commitments, hoping to develop the most extensive online guidebook.

An independent view
DutchJamaica.com is independent and impartial. We are not sponsored and do not accept commercial offers from business concerns or other institutions. Profits, coming in via advertisements, are used to pay the expenses of the site.
The information on this website is gathered by ourselves.
Besides that DutchJamaica.com publishes information and work that is offered by third parties such as travellers or Jamaican people themselves. Before being published on the website all information is checked on correctness.

DutchJamaica.com aims to offer her visitor a clear and honest view on Jamaica. We do not represent things better or finer then they are. That means that we are not making way for the negative image of the island.
Although a greater part of this image is in our opinion not justified (as mainly with this type of images) we will not and cannot deny that certain aspects of the Jamaican society are good for nothing. These aspects too will get our attention with as aim to inform our visitor as complete as possible. So that he is well prepared before going on his way.

And a bit more
Besides the (future) guidebook a number of extras are added to the site.

In the "message forums" (future) visitors of Jamaica can exchange views with each other. It goes without saying that Jamaicans themselves and other interested persons are invited to take part in these discussions and, in this manner, provide each other with funny and useful information.

Visitors are invited to post comments on items and places to stay. In the 'debate' visitors are asked to give their opinion about an actual Jamaican issue.

DutchJamaica.com offers the smaller enterpriser in the tourist industry (or connected to this) in Jamaica the possibility to make his activities universally known via our site.
This is free of charge for the concerning enterpriser. The result is binary: the enterpriser has a free homepage that can worldwide be visited and for DutchJamaica.com the homepage is a fine supplement on the website.
More of these enlargements are planned. "Soon come" should a Jamaican say.

And finally this...
Undoubtedly you already noticed that our mother tongue is the Dutch language. Because this is not a real "universal language" and because we want to reach a public that is as large as possible we have chosen to set up this site in English.
But… during our school time we were not too fond of the English lessons and we preferred to be busy with (more funnier) things. Actually, we still do. In other words: you will come across some spelling- and grammar mistakes. In that case: laugh at it and think like a Jamaican: "no problem". Or, better, mention them to us, we certainly appreciate that.

We wish you a lot of pleasure on our site and are open for remarks and observations.

Respect! ;-)

About where we build this site...
Hmm, we almost forgot...., actually there is another reason why we love Jamaica so much...

You see, below you see the current weather from the city of Liège in the eastern part of Belgium, Europe. Now, this website is created and modified almost daily on a location in the hills just 40 minutes east of Liège.

Well..., now you know enough, right?

Yeah, we do love Jamaica! :-)))
