Is Jamaica going in the right direction?

According a poll of the Jamaica Gleaner published on May 21, 2007, Jamaica is 'going in the right direction'.

More Jamaicans are of the view that the Government is doing a good job. However, hot items still are jobs, poor road conditions and water problems.

What do you think?
Is Jamaica going in the right direction?

3. What is...?
Maybe the question should be:
'Whats is the right direction for Jamaica?'

Is there a right direction anyway???

5. NO!!
First of all the poll was in the Gleaner. A pro goverment paper. So the poll has no value.
I've been in Ja now 8 times since 1993.
Tourists see only the dream factories at the north coast and well tended spots they can visit with busses. They never leave the beaten track. There is the corruption, crime is rising and indeed some people are getting richer but the poor are the loosers (remember Portia?).
And have people already forgotten the massive rip off with the carricom visas during the Cricket World cup? And the useless stadium in Falmouth?
And the massive (spanish) hotels, poorly build and destroying everything (e.g. Pear tree bottom)?

But the big looser is the country itself stripmined by the bauxite companies. I've been there and it is awfull (e.g. Newport, Manchester)!!
It's incredible to see what the bauxite industry does to the environment and communities. They realy dig to edge of the houses and the politicians take pride in this! The bauxite companies promise to put topsoil back of 3 feet. But no, if they put something back it's rocks where nothing will grow. They destroy people's fields, for a lot of these people this is the only way to earn some money. I know people who has been relocated by the bauxite industry to other parts of the island. Destroying communities and leaving people alone without no means of living. And then they wonder where all the crime is comming from!

Really Jamaica is destroyed for the moment and the profits are not for the people!

And now they want to dig up Cockpit Country!!! Can you believe it? This madness has to stop!

Just my two cents.

Guy

7. Is it really?
As a yearly visitor of Jamaica I don't know much about the politics in Jamaica (only from what I read in the UK newspapers), but I don't see much changes since I met Jamaica for the first time in 2001.
The problems with the roads, the damage after heavy rainfall, the jobs... These problems were there in 2001 (and probably much earlier) and still are in 2007.

On the other hand, I agree with Alan, the new prime minister deserves a change. She can't fix it in just one year, nobody can.

8. Yes, Jamaica is...
Yes, I think Jamaica is driving the right road.
It goes a bit slow, but don't forget Jamaica is a small country in a big world.
Things are going better, bit by bit.
And hey, give the new government a change, they can't fix all issues in one day you know... :)
